Qatar Signals Flexibility on Temporary Hormuz Transit Charges, Rejects Permanent Fees

Qatar has expressed opposition to any long-term transit fees for ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, warning that permanent charges could increase costs for global consumers and disrupt trade.

Speaking at a regional security forum in Singapore, Qatar’s Deputy Prime Minister Sheikh Saoud bin Abdulrahman Al Thani stated that while permanent tolls are not supported, temporary fees tied to specific maritime safety measures—such as mine-clearing and restoring secure navigation—could be considered.

The comments come amid ongoing discussions over the future management of one of the world’s most important shipping routes, which carries a significant share of global energy supplies. Qatar continues to support diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing regional tensions and ensuring the safe flow of international maritime traffic.
