Israel Expands Southern Lebanon Operations as Iran–U.S. Talks Stall Amid Regional Tensions

Israeli forces have reportedly taken control of the historic Beaufort Castle and nearby Beaufort Ridge in southern Lebanon, in what is being described as one of their most significant advances against Hezbollah since the recent ceasefire period began, according to Reuters.

The Israeli military said the operation was carried out to secure strategic high ground and disrupt Hezbollah positions believed to be used for launching rockets into northern Israel. One Israeli soldier was reportedly killed during the fighting, while additional Israeli operations are continuing in areas near Nabatieh, a key Hezbollah stronghold.

The escalation follows a sharp increase in cross-border attacks, with Hezbollah intensifying strikes on northern Israel, leading to heightened security measures, school closures, and public restrictions in several communities.

At the same time, diplomatic efforts between the United States and Iran remain unresolved. Tehran is pushing for sanctions relief, unfreezing of assets, and broader economic concessions, while Washington is reportedly insisting that any easing of restrictions must be gradual and tied to compliance measures. Mediated discussions are said to involve regional intermediaries, including Pakistan, but no final agreement has been reached.

Key disputes include Iran’s demand for immediate access to frozen funds, relief for its energy exports, and a large-scale reconstruction support package, while U.S. officials remain cautious about making sweeping commitments.

Tensions in the region have also raised concerns over the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping route. Iran has reinforced its control posture in the area and warned commercial and military vessels to follow its regulations for passage, further increasing uncertainty in global energy markets.

Meanwhile, fighting in southern Lebanon has intensified, with reports of expanded Israeli ground movements beyond the Litani River toward Nabatieh. Lebanese authorities have condemned the operations, accusing Israel of causing widespread destruction and civilian casualties, while calling for an immediate ceasefire.

Hezbollah has continued to claim attacks on Israeli military targets using rockets and drones, while Israel has tightened border security, restricting civilian movement and closing schools in affected northern areas.

U.S. officials have also warned that military options remain on the table if nuclear negotiations with Iran collapse, signaling that diplomatic efforts have yet to ease broader regional tensions.
